The company motto “Better sound through research” isn’t simply plucked out of thin air.
Dr. Amar Bose (1929-2013) had been working on the development of audio systems since 1956 after being dissatisfied with what was available on the market, which led him to establish the Bose Corporation in 1964. Above all, he was always interested in imitating the sound of a concert hall in his living room in the best possible way. To achieve this, he soon developed unconventional approaches that culminated in the equally legendary and controversial Model 901 in 1968. The “direct-reflected” principle, in which rear-mounted drivers increase the subjectively perceived room dimensions via wall and ceiling reflections, is still used throughout the manufacturer’s model range today. The success in the home country of the USA was soon followed by global expansion, which began in 1972 with a cooperation with a German dealer. The Bose Wave Radio, another universally known model, made its first appearance in 1993. Bose also made a name for itself as a pioneer of Active Noise Cancellation technology, as used for private users in the “Quiet Comfort” headphones and earphones, but also in the “ProFlight” headsets for pilots. With PA and conference sound systems as well as products used in aerospace and military applications, Bose has been at home in the professional and government sectors as well as in home audio since the beginning of the company’s history. Congratulations on the 60th anniversary!
